Question: LAKE OSWEGO CITY COUNCIL SEEKS SIGNIFICANT PROTECTION FOR DRINKING WATER and WILDERNESS?
Answer: Regna Merritt, Water Protection Advocate for Oregon Natural Resources Council, later thanked Council members for passing a formal resolution which reflects the desires of Lake Oswego residents working in alliance with environmental groups. "The Lake Oswego City Council studied the issues carefully, listened to the public and took significant steps to increase protections for drinking water and wilderness. Now the ball is in the delegation's court." Lake Oswego joins the cities of Portland, West Linn, Sandy, Detroit, Salem and Eugene in seeking increased protections for their primary drinking water sources. Background on Eagle Timber Sales The Eagle Timber Sales, located in unprotected wilderness in the South Fork of Eagle Creek, have been very controversial since initially proposed several years ago. They were sold during the last days of the so-called "Salvage Rider." This "rider" denied citizens the right to legally challenge timber sales. The purchaser, Vanport Manufacturing, offered to stop logging these sales if the Forest Service determines that this would be in the public interest and if alternative volume could be provided.
