Bacteria In Drinking Water

Question:
I have a high level of coliform bacteria in my well. What can I do to get lower the bacteria level in the well? Also, will boiling the water 10 minutes kill the bacteria and make the water ok to drink assuming the water is not contaminated in any other way?

Answer: Do two things first: Shock the well with chlorox (Your local public health department can give you more information or see my FAQ (should be still around)), Then retest in a few weeks.

Also find out if the bacteria are fecal coliform (a subset of coliform), these are the ones you really need to worry about.

If this doesn't get rid of them, you can boil the water, treat with iodine or chlorine, or filter with a ceramic filter. There is no need to boil for 10 minutes, just reaching the boiling point is enough.

I would also start hunting for an abandoned well that wasn't capped properly. You might be able to find and fix the problem.
