Question: A few days ago we were over at sears to pick up a replacement water filter cartridge for our refrigerator. While there we decided to take a look at the small up-right freezers. They had a model there on sale- $199 marked down from $290. I belive it was 7.5 cubic feet. Manual defrost. We placed our order. It was temporarily out of stock, but should be available in about 10 days. Now I'm curious who makes the freezer? Any idea?
Answer: Whirlpool doesn't make freezers. From The Consumer Reports web site: Nearly all freezers sold in the U.S. are made by only two companies: Frigidaire and a Canadian manufacturer, W.C. Woods. Among major brands made by Frigidaire: Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Kenmore (by far the biggest-selling brand, sold by Sears), Tappan and White-Westinghouse. Frigidaire also makes General Electric uprights. Woods makes Admiral, Amana, Magic Chef, Maytag, Roper and Whirlpool models. It also makes GE chests. Most of those Frigidaire units are made in a plant four blocks from my house in St. Cloud, MN. I bought an 11.5 cu.ft. upright myself a few weeks ago and looked into branding so I could get a "local" unit from a retailer.
