Question: Many countries such as Uruguay, and the Netherlands have attempted tomake water privatization illegal. Perhaps Mexico city has learnt thehard way, what the more enlightened of us realised long ago. Clean fresh drinking water is a basic human right, not an opportunityto turn a profit for the greedy's. How would people on the unemployment profit from the privitisation of water?
Answer: As usual a 2 line propaganda comment on a very complex situation. Theproblems of Auckland's water supply are child's play compared to MexicoCity. It's water supply has only had private investment recently. GovernmentAuthorities couldn't provide the people with a continuous supply of cleandrinking water. Because it cannot run off into the sea as Auckland's wastewater can waste water has run back and contaminated incoming fresh water. Somuch ground water has been drawn off the ground is sinking cracking freshwater, sewerage and waste water pipes. There is not enough water for thecity's population. Water has been drawn off from elsewhere (like Waikatoriver water to Auckland). But this has left other areas short and causedcivil unrest. A final solution to the problem requires huge amounts of moneywhich the Mexican government doesn't have. As a result it has drawn loansfrom the World Bank. Paying back these loans has necessitated the raising ofwater charges which are hard on poor people. The government has invited inprivate companies with private capital. Some private projects are under way.Of course they have to be paid for by water charges. Some private watercompanies in Mexico and elsewhere have wished they never entered thosecountries. They have poured in billions of dollars with little hope ofmaking much profit. It is an enormous problem caused almost entirely by the huge population ofMexico City. Of course people are entitled to a supply of clean water but atwhose expense? Individual families can sink wells and buy water cleaningequipment or they can pay for an organisation, private or government to doit for them. Janice can only see things through her communist tinted glasses. Privateprofit is a crime. Yet she holds her hand out for her pay packet notrealising that is her personal profit for her work.
