Question: I am considering purchasing a Multi-Pure drinking water system for myhome. The manufacturer is Multi-Pure Corp. out of Chatsworth,California.Does anyone have experience with this specific system? If so,what has it been - negative, positive? Specifically, the company claims that the unit (about half the size of atypical garbage disposal) can filter a full year’s worth of drinkingwaterbefore replacing the filter cartridge. I question if you can get a fullyear’s use out of one small filter.
Answer: I looked into the MultiPure system, and saw one at a home expo. I endedup assembling my own filter. Our water is hard but not excessivelycontaminated with chemicals; I use a two-stage filter (standard filtercanisters), with both stages being activated carbon (granular) filters. All of the components can be purchased at your local home supply store-- I paid $12 each for the filter canisters and I pay $6 each for thefilters, which I replace every 6 months. This is substantially cheaperthan other options, even kits using the exact same components that I sawfor sale. We installed our filter system in the basement pantry beneath thekitchen. It feeds a separate tap on the kitchen sink, the icemaker/water dispenser in the refridgerator, and my home beer brewery. We get about 3 gal/minute flow. The rest of the house gets softenedwater. The only drawback (if you consider it as such) is that the ice cubescontain some mineral precipitates, tiny white flakes that can be seen ifyou hold a glass of water up to the light. We wanted to consume theminerals in the first place, so this does not bother us.
