Nitrate in drinking water

Question:
I watched the TV news (Look north) yesterday about the nitrateproblem. (relationship between high nitrate water and braincancer.) They said some people at Leeds university publishedthe paper about that. Does anyone know about that?(who? which department?)

Answer: I don't know about the report, but I do know that the Environment Agencyis doing an on-going investigation, along with Yorkshire Water, toevaluate the effects of nitrates on the drinking water extracted fromgroundwater over in East Yorkshire. Whilst I was over there, I washelping evaluate the fissure-flow of water through the unsaturated zonesof chalk by borehole logging. I note particularly that nitrateconcentrations in and around Kilham are much higher than is officiallyallowed; YW has had to combine the water with other waters to achieveacceptable levels.

I know; I used to work there. I used to have to cycle around the ArmelyGiratory every day got knocked off once.

Point is, much of the offices that used to be in the Gelderd Road siteare now by the White Rose Centre; even more out of town.

I was published in the Independent last year for slating the Agency'scar dependency systems.
