Question:
I became familiar with the Culligan H-5 systems years ago and I still haveone, new in the box, I haven't been able to use. They really do make waterquite delicious and the ice cubes come out totally clear. They still makeRO systems now, and my old H-5 system is still good technology, but thereason I have never been able to use it is because you are supposed to havereally super good water pressure to use it. I have always had well waterfor the last 22 years, so no go. Also there are some other caveats - ifyour house water is acidic, it will destroy the reverse osmosis modulemembrane, which is how the minerals are removed by being forced through thatseries of membranes. The ideal way to use such systems are if you have lowacidic city water and good pressure, have a water softener which removesmost of the minerals beforehand, then lastly the RO system. Theinteresting fact is that RO water met the legal requirements for thedefinition of distilled water. They are great gadgets and the water isabsolutely delicious, but if you are concerned about what is in your water,it is the most you can get in a home system.......IF you can use it.

Answer: There exists very common apparatus that pumps well water into apressurized tank, which will drive an RO system. All you needis someone without a "no-can-do" attitude. Just because someonecan't do it, doesn't mean it can't be done. But that is people'sfavorite cop-out.

That is not the main problem. For 20 years I dealt with the acidic waterand the fact that the modules tend to clog/burn out more frequently withouthaving a water softener first treat the water. We only had pre-filters totake out sediment. We would have needed a de-acidifying tank (filled withlimestone usually), then a water softener, then the extra pressure tank....it was just too much messing around and expense, and there was no room forall that equipment.

In our present home, we HAVE these things as a part of the treatment systemin place, but the water is absolutely delicious without the H-5 already, sowhy bother with it now? The few minerals it would remove at this pointhardly seem worth the trouble.
