reverse-osmosis questions

Question:
Can anyone give me some info on reverse osmosis units? My son and I aregoing on a fish-collecting expedition in July to Peru and will need tosoften our water considerably. Are some units better than others? Howlarge a unit do I need for maybe a couple of hundred gallons of aquariumwater? How do I collect and store the water for water changes?

Answer: There are a number of sources of reverse osmosis units. I would checkwith your LFS for a portable one. These will generally produce from 30to 50 gals of water per day.

Generally, when you are collecting fish you would need to use the waterthey came from.

Another question. How do you plan to move 200 gallons of water? Thatweighs over 800 pounds. Even if you are discarding much of this you arestill talking about a lot of weight.

You may want to consider a DI unit if this is the type of water youneed. You will need to bring reconstitution products for either of theseunits.

How about plain old peat? This will soften the water without removingessential elements for survival.

Just some thoughts on your endeavor.
