When we moved into our house two years ago, the county inspector saidthat we had bacteria (not sure what type, but caused by decayingorganic material) in our well water.

The seller of the house installed a clorine-based purification system.Actually, it's a kludgy system with a big garbage can filled with awater and bleach mixture which gets injected by a pump into the housewater system.

The guy that installed it mentioned that there is a more expensiveultra-violet light based water purification system available. Anyoneknow anything about it, or an alternative?

Answer: Actually, your kludgy system is used by a great many smalltowns and villages.. at least, if it is a hypochloritesolution injected in the pump-to-tank stream and then heldin the tank for x hours before you use it.

The ultraviolet and ozone systems may well be better foryou, but are or were very expensive the last time Iinvestigated them.

There are also erosion type units (just amounts to thewater passing over the "tablet" before getting to thetank), and a few others.

The thing about the liquid unit you're using is if you doit right (you want to maintain a specific parts permillion of hypochlorite/water formula), you have the mostcost effective method available and not really a danger.

Have you had the water tested lately? you may only need totreat the water at certain times of the year. however ifyour well is shallow, or you are not sure of whats inyou're groundwater influence area you should treat anyway.

The treatment you're using is to combat e.coli and someother pathenogenic bacteria.. You can also benefit byadding some type of filter..
