Answer: Swapping survival kit content lists is a lot of fun. If I go off intothe woods for a day that might turn into an overnight or so, I try togroup the contents of my pack into catagories.... 1. Communications - I'm an amateur radio operator, so there is alwaysa radio, extra bateries, telescoping antenna, and a water proof bagthrough which I can operate. Also in this catagory a signal mirror, and a few light sticks. 2. Navigation - compass and regional maps (I hope I have those at least).small light binnoculars. 3. Fire - waterproof matches, one or two trioxane fuel bars, or home madetinder (vasilene soaked cotton), sometimes an additional fire starterlike a magnesium bar, and sometimes a small candle. 4. Heat/warmth/shelter - sometimes fire is impractical. I also carry afew chemical heat packs, and an extra heavy sweater, gloves (double aswork gloves if necessary), emergency blanket (the multi-layer one),a wool ski-style hat, extra socks, 50ft. of para-cord, and a walkingstick which can double as a makeshift tent pole if necessary. 5. Food/water - liter of water, one or two MREs, granola bars, bottleof trail mix, few packets of dried soup, water purification straw, spareempty water bag (1 liter), sometimes some iodine for water purification, and a small pot with a lid (stores food inside). If I'm travelingrelatively heavy, I'll also include an Israelie survival stove. 6. Entertainment - some paper back novel I haven't read yet. 7. First aid - Kit with a few extras. We could spend all day justswapping favorite first-aid kit content lists... Mine has topicalantibiotics, needle & thread for repairs, safety pins, asprin/tylenol,decongestant, etc. 8. Light - Mini-mag, lightsticks, very small LED flashlights aroundmy neck. I've put all of these items together into a single day pack. Totalweight is about 15 lbs. if I *knew* I was going to be out for a while, and would have to catch food, etc., I would add a good slingshot, fishingline & hooks, wire for snares, etc.
